From Symptoms to Solutions: The Role of Functional Lab Testing in Nutritional Therapy

Uncover the Root Cause of symptoms, Personalise Your Plan, and Achieve Long-Term Wellness

When it comes to improving your health, there’s a huge amount of advice out there, some of it helpful and accurate, some of it entirely about marketing, and some dubious to say the least… and it can be confusing to know what to follow. For example, you might have tried eating more plant foods, cutting carbs, increasing protein, taking a supplement etc. If you’ve tried all the ‘right’ things, but you still don’t feel yourself, or still have persistent symptoms, what do you do next?

That’s where the combination of nutritional therapy and functional lab testing can make all the difference. Together, they provide a powerful, personalised approach to wellness that goes beyond guesswork and dives into the root causes of your symptoms.

What Is Functional Lab Testing?

Functional lab testing looks at how your body is functioning, not just whether you fall within a standard ‘normal’ range. It’s different from the conventional lab test you might get through your GP or hospital, which often focusses on diagnosing disease or abnormalities.

Instead, functional lab testing is designed to detect imbalances, deficiencies, and dysfunctions, often before they turn into diagnosable conditions. It can also be about finding out if your body is functioning optimally or where there is room for improvement.  These insights help guide targeted, nutrition and supplement based interventions that are unique to you and your results.

Some common types of functional lab testing used in nutritional therapy include:

GI Effects (Comprehensive Stool Analysis)

This functional test looks at digestive function and the microbiome.  It can identify yeast imbalance, parasites, how well you absorb your food and the balance between the ‘good and bad’ bacteria living in your gut (microbiome).

It is suitable for people experiencing symptoms such as: Flatulence, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, feeling overly full after eating or problems with digestion of fatty foods. It can also be useful for people with allergies, autoimmune conditions or skin conditions, this is due to the fact that around 70% of the immune system in found in the gut and the health of the gut impacts these types of conditions.

  • DUTCH Test (Hormone Panel)

This functional test measures sex hormones and stress hormones and gives a complete overview of hormonal health.

It’s suitable for women who have hormonal related heath conditions such as endometriosis, PMS, fertility problems, PCOS, for men with prostate conditions or fertility problems, and for anyone experiencing long term stress with difficulty sleeping, waking or fatigue. Hormones can easily be thrown off balance and the Dutch test offers insights into what’s going on so that your functional medicine practitioner (or nutritional therapist) can help you bring them back into balance through personalised nutrition and supplements if needed.

  • Metablomix+ (Nutritional Assessment testing)

This functional test assesses your personal requirements for vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients such as antioxidants.  It measures organic acids, amino acids, fatty acids and it’s possible to add toxic elements or a selection of genomics to the test as an add on.

Whilst this test can be interesting to gain an insight into your own personal nutritional needs, it can also be helpful in gaining an insight into problems around chronic fatigue or stress, chromic inflammation, mood disorders, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease.

  • Food Sensitivity Testing and allergy testing

This functional test checks for your response to a whole range of common food intolerances and food allergies as well as environmental allergens.  The test looks for IgG antibodies and IgE reactions in the blood.  It’s a simple at home test. As 70% of the immune system is found in the gut, reactions to foods can cause the gut to have to work harder to deal with foods that the body is intolerant or allergic to.

This test can be helpful for people who experience symptoms such a fatigue, IBS, digestive problems, nausea, or even mental health issues or ‘brain fog’.

Unlike some of the other tests mentioned, York Labs are open to anyone to purchase a test online, there is no need to purchase through a nutritional practitioner.  However, once the results have been received, it can be helpful to book in for support with analysing the results and making the necessary dietary changes to see positive results.

Why Testing Beats Guessing

Many clients come to nutritional therapy after having tried countless diets, supplements, or lifestyle changes themselves, with inconsistent or underwhelming results. That’s because they have been basing their research purely on symptoms alone, not root causes.

Symptoms like fatigue, bloating, anxiety, or brain fog can have multiple potential triggers, and whilst a good nutritional therapist can work out a lot through detailed questioning, testing is a short cut to finding solutions. For example, one person may experience fatigue due to low iron, while another person may experience similar symptoms caused by adrenal dysregulation.

With functional lab testing, we get real data to pinpoint what’s going on underneath the surface and find the root cause of symptoms. It removes an element of guesswork and ensures that every recommendation is relevant, targeted, and effective.

How Lab Testing Guides Nutritional Therapy

Once your lab results come back, that’s where the magic of personalised nutrition begins. A nutritional therapist will interpret the results using a holistic approach, taking into account your full health history, current symptoms, and lifestyle.

Here are a few examples of how a nutritional therapist may put some of the information from functional lab tests into action:

  • Low vitamin D or magnesium? You may be recommended therapeutic doses of supplements, food sources, and strategies for better absorption.
  • Signs of dysbiosis or gut inflammation? Your plan may include a phased gut repair protocol with specific foods, herbs, and probiotics.
  • Cortisol or sex hormone imbalance? You may be introduced to foods that encourage balance, adjust meal timing, add adaptogenic herbs, or support your liver with targeted nutrients.

Rather than a generic meal plan or supplement list, you get a plan tailored to your body’s current needs and designed to support from the inside out. Not all lifestyles lend themselves to every intervention, so nutritional plans also consider what’s possible for you around your daily commitments.

The Client Journey: From Testing to Transformation

Here’s how functional lab testing integrates into a typical client journey:

  1. Pre-consultation.  You will be asked to complete a full health history questionnaire and food diary.
  2. Initial Consultation.  We explore your health history, lifestyle, symptoms, and goals.
  3. Test Recommendations. Based on your needs, we choose the most appropriate tests. You will also be given dietary tips to start you off.
  4. Sample Collection. Many tests can be done at home via saliva, urine, or stool; blood work can be arranged through a lab.
  5. Results Review. Once results are in, we go over them together in detail.
  6. Personalised Plan. You receive a nutrition, lifestyle and supplement plan (if needed) aligned with your lab results.
  7. Ongoing Support. We monitor your progress and adjust as needed. You have access to an App where you can ask questions of your nutritional therapist as they happen rather than waiting for your next appointment. Some clients choose to retest after a period to track improvements, but most are content to notice the improvements and don’t need a test to tell them things are much better!

Who Can Benefit from Functional Lab Testing?

Functional lab testing can support a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Chronic fatigue or low energy
  • Bloating, constipation, or other digestive issues
  • Hormonal imbalances (e.g., PMS, perimenopause, thyroid concerns)
  • Skin conditions like acne, eczema, or rosacea
  • Anxiety, low mood, or poor sleep
  • Autoimmune or inflammatory conditions
  • Weight loss resistance
  • General wellness optimisation

You don’t need to be ‘sick’ to benefit. Many clients use lab testing as a preventative or performance-based tool used to improve energy, sleep, focus, and vitality as they strive to optimise their overall heath.

Empowering You with Data-Driven Nutrition

In nutritional therapy, knowledge is power and functional lab testing gives us the knowledge to act with precision. By uncovering what your body truly needs and the root cause of any imbalance, we can create a highly personalised plan that helps you thrive and feel your best.

The Costs

Functional Lab testing can be costly, depending on the type of test.  Payment is usually made to the lab direct and is additional to the cost of nutritional therapy sessions.  Increasingly labs are recognising that many people want to know what’s going on in their own bodies and are frustrated by the lack of answers from the medical profession, this is why many will offer payment plans to make functional lab testing more affordable.

At Jan Cooper Nutrition, all test analysis is included in packages of support with no additional cost for interpreting your results.  Nutritional packages are also offered with payment plans to help with affordability.
